Deadpool and Wolverine is currently taking the world by storm. As of August 8, it has amassed over $900 million worldwide at the box office. And if you go on social media, it’s rife with memes, references, and discussions about the movie. But with movie tickets seemingly being more expensive than ever, is it worth trekking to the movie theaters, paying for the tickets and snacks, and watching Deadpool and Wolverine?

TL;DR: I would say: yes. It is worth it. But that’s just my opinion.

Deadpool and Wolverine Sypnosis

Let me give you a quick rundown of what the movie is about. Deadpool discovers that his universe is about to be wiped out. So, he and a very reluctant Wolverine, team up to stop that from happening. As in many of the recent Marvel films and TV shows, the concept of the multiverse is heavily ingrained into the movie.

So, if you’re a fan of that, you will enjoy this movie. And if you’re burned out on the idea of the multiverse, well, this movie might be a harder sell.

Now that you know the basic premise of the movie, let’s check out what the reviewers have to say about whether the new Deadpool movie is worth watching.

What Critics Have to Say About the New Deadpool Movie

Variety

Peter Debruge had this to say about the film during their review:

The laughs are a given, but not the misty-eyed reaction to the final minutes of “Deadpool & Wolverine,” which is by far the most fan-service sequel released under the Marvel banner — and that’s saying something, since the comic book empire panders even harder to its flock than the faith-based industry does.

IGN

In his review for IGN, Tom Jorgensen gave the film a 7/10 and said:

Deadpool & Wolverine is a hilarious superhero buddy comedy full of surprising, self-referential MCU humor and unsurprising plot and pacing problems.

Deadline

Chief Film Critic Pete Hammond wrote this for his review on Deadline:

Levy, who also co-produced and co-wrote the film (with Reynolds & Rhett Reiss & Paul Wernick & Zeb Wells), abandons his well-known family-friendly filmography and fits comfortably into this particular universe, not only letting the blue comedy rip and the action soar but also managing to ingest heart and ultimately friendship into a winning mix that tonally never seems off for a minute in the (thankfully) tight 127-minute running time.

Empire

Olly Richards for Empire said:

As the film itself acknowledges (albeit half-jokingly), Marvel is currently “at a low point”, after a string of misfires. Deadpool & Wolverine is a strong answer to the question of whether the franchise still has life in it. It states a confident yes, and does so by putting character first and Universe second.

The Hollywood Reporter

Reviewing for The Hollywood ReporterDavid Rooney said:

I’ll be honest, I found this movie messy and overstuffed, but I laughed almost as often as I cringed from its obnoxiousness and can’t dispute that a vast audience will delight in every moment. Even if they spend much of the running time sticking blades through each other’s handily regenerating flesh, Reynolds and Jackman make sweet love and appear to be having a great time doing it. They bring a semblance of heart.

penguinz0

YouTuber penguinz0, also known as Charlie, concluded his video review by saying:

Overall, I enjoyed the movie, but of the three Deadpool films, this one is my least favorite even though I still really enjoyed it.

The Critical Drinker

YouTuber The Critical Drinker also reviewed the film and said this:

Ultimately, while I think Deadpool and Wolverine is bit of a bloated chaotic mess at times, and probably relies a little too much on its gimmicky premise for its own good, it’s still lightyears ahead of almost anything Marvel has put out in recent years. And delivers enough laughs and fanservice to keep most people happy.

And it’s not just the critics who feel positive toward the movie, the audience seems to generally like the movie as well

Deadpool and Wolverine IMDB Score:

On IMDB, the film’s user rating is 8.1/10 out of 183k ratings, with 139K users giving it an 8 or higher.

Deadpool and Wolverine Rotten Tomato Score:

And on Rotten Tomatoes, it’s much of the same with the critic’s score being 78% (based on 369 reviews) and the audience score being 91% (based on 10,000+ ratings).

What Did I Think of Deadpool and Wolverine?

Personally, I was not a fan of the overarching story; it felt lackluster. But I can forgive that because what really makes the movie shine are the interactions between the two titular characters and their off-the-charts chemistry. They work so well together, and even though there are a lot of comedic moments between the two, there are also a lot of heartfelt ones as well. And that’s what makes Deadpool and Wolverine special.

Underneath all the cocaine jokes, the 4th wall-breaking moments, and the over-the-top violence, this movie is very sweet and sincere, and it feels like a genuine goodbye letter to the 20th Century Fox/Marvel era.

So, like I said at the beginning of the article, Deadpool and Wolverine is absolutely worth watching. You won’t want to miss watching this on the big screen.
